How to Spot Scams Before They Hook You

Every day, cybercriminals send millions of fake emails, text messages, and social media messages hoping someone will click a malicious link or share personal information. These phishing scams are one of the most common ways criminals steal passwords, account numbers, and sensitive data.

The good news? Most phishing attempts have warning signs.

Before you click, ask yourself:

  • Was I expecting this message?

  • Do I recognize the sender?

  • Is there a sense of urgency?

  • Does the link or email address look unusual?

  • Is someone asking for personal or financial information?

Scammers often try to create panic by claiming your account has been locked, you’ve won a prize, or immediate action is required. Don’t let urgency rush your decision.

Instead of clicking a link in an unexpected message, visit the company’s website directly by typing the web address into your browser or call the company using a trusted phone number. One thoughtful moment can prevent a costly mistake.

Shop Smart This Holiday Season

The holidays bring festive celebrations and online deals and unfortunately also bring an increase in scams targeting online shoppers.

If you’re buying gifts, booking travel, or making charitable donations, a little extra caution can help keep your money and personal information safe.

Consider these tips:

  • Shop only from trusted retailers and websites.

  • Look for “https://” and the padlock icon before entering payment information.

  • Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true.

  • Avoid making purchases while connected to public Wi-Fi.

  • Verify QR codes before scanning them.

  • Never provide payment information through unsolicited emails or text messages.

  • Monitor your account activity throughout the holiday season.

Remember, legitimate businesses won’t pressure you to make an immediate purchase or ask you to pay using gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers.

The busiest shopping season is also one of the busiest scam seasons. Taking a few extra seconds before making a purchase can help ensure your holidays stay merry and bright.

FSC Scholarships - Now Accepting Applications

The FSC is offering 16 $1,500 scholarships to credit union members throughout Minnesota, eight to traditional applicants and eight to non-traditional applicants.

The 2026 scholarship question is: What personal financial challenge do you believe is unique to your generation, and how has it impacted your education, career goals, or future plans? We are interested in your unique perspective and lived experience - tell your story.

Any member of a Minnesota Credit Union Network affiliated credit union pursuing post-secondary education in the fall 2027/spring 2028 OR is a high school senior graduating in 2027 is eligible to apply. Applications are now open and close on November 30, 2026.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: MEET YADIRA!

We’re excited to introduce Yadira, our newest member service representative in our Renville Branch! Although she’s only been with our team for three weeks, she has already become a valued part of our credit union family.

Favorite Season:

Fall, because it’s the perfect season for dressing cozy.

Favorite Hobby:

Yadira has many hobbies, but spending time with her family is her absolute favorite.

Favorite Food:

Her mom’s pozole, a traditional Mexican dish that’s hard to beat!

Most Rewarding Part of Her Job:

Working alongside such great coworkers.

Fun Fact:

Yadira is incredibly creative and loves finding ways to express her creativity.

Family Life:

Yadira has been engaged for about a year to her fiance, and they’ve been together for 13 years. Together, they are raising three wonderful children, ages 11, 9, and 3.
