New Chapter
July 2023 starts a new chapter on the mission of serving and growing the credit union membership with the name change to Greater Community Credit Union. This name change was determined to be prudent due to the expanding field of membership to include Otter Tail County and the potential for additional growth areas.
The Greater Community name was chosen due to our seven-county field of membership being located on western side of Greater Minnesota and our goal of contributing to the success of the communities in those counties. Our credit union has taken pride in contributing to communities including Chamber of Commerce activities, school events, city beautification projects, community sports activities, arts associations, county fairs, summer festivals and other community projects.
It would be remiss to go forward without appreciating the history of the credit unions and the volunteer leadership throughout the years. Dawson Co-op Credit Union was formed in 1961 when fifty-five potential members met in the public library and applied for a credit union charter. Renville volunteers assembled and formed a credit union in 1956. Employees of Otter Tail Power gathered and formed an employee credit union in 1954. And prior to the other credit unions, leaders in Fergus Falls organized and applied for a charter for Fergus Falls Community Credit Union in 1942.
Products and service deliveries have changed since 1942, but the credit union structure remains the same-member owned, volunteer leadership, not-for profit. I thank all volunteer leaders in all the previous credit unions and the loyalty of the membership that allowed this combined credit union to grow and prosper. With your member support, I feel confident in the future of Greater Community Credit Union.
